The problem with the term self-care I’m just going to come out and say it. So many narcissist cling to the term and it hurts the true meaning of the word self-care. The same can be said about some other words, like entrepreneur or personal trainer. All of these words are used by people, who abuse them to give themselves an ego boost. Or to posture or leverage themselves over others. With that being said my post is not for those who want to weaponize my words to feed their own ego. Who is the article aimed at Self-care is often ignored by those who need it most. A lot of us were raised (myself included) to feel guilty about putting ourselves first. However and this is a story for another time, some one once explained to me the following phrase. you cannot pour from an empty cup In other words, if you are running on fumes, what good are you to yourself and others. I still suffer guilt so I try to schedule my self-care time early, so that when others need me, I’m done with the things that matter to me, like stretching meditation, and working out. I will discuss in future articles exactly what falls under self-care but for today I just want to point out how self-care can improve your life. Going back to the metaphor about an empty cup, when you care for yourself guess what kinds of doors you open up. Time to be yourself , for me I have to be an Trainer, a social media creative, run a blog, shoot videos etc. So during the time I have to myself, I am able to go in and be present, and focused when it is time to work. A better connection with others , when you have squared away what you need to do for yourself you see others as less of a stress factor. For example, if you workout in the morning when your kids need last minute things from you, you can be there for them. A lot of time my clients have resentment towards their kids, or bosses for requiring things from them that take away from their workouts. For me I find it best to schedule things at a time when no one can bug you. You can self-care at any time , I prefer the morning for the heavy things requiring attention like working out or meditation. Other things I can squeeze in through out the day. So look at your current lifestyle what time of day works best for you? What can you do through out the day, such as saying positive things to yourself that won’t take up any time at all?
